Gallery Server Binary Pack Updated

By | April 12th, 2017|Announcements|0 Comments

Today we released an updated version of the Gallery Server Binary Pack. It contains the latest versions of three open source utilities that give you advanced gallery functionality such as audio/video transcoding and video, CR2, NEF, PDF, TIF and EPS image generation. They are ImageMagick 7.0.5, FFmpeg 3.2.4, and GhostScript 9.21. Before installing these utilities, first uninstall any existing installations of ImageMagick and GhostScript on your web server. Then download the Binary Pack and extract the contents of the zip file to an empty directory. Copy ffmpeg.exe to the bin directory of your Gallery Server web application. Install GhostScript by copying gs921w64.exe to your web server and then running it. If you are using a web hosting company, you likely aren’t allowed to run executables on the server. In this case, the best you can do is create a support ticket to ask them to do it. Install ImageMagick by copying ImageMagick-7.0.5-4-Q16-x64-dll.exe to your web server and [...]

Just Released: 4.3 adds support for replacing existing media files

By | February 10th, 2017|Announcements|0 Comments

Yesterday we released Gallery Server 4.3. You can now replace the file of an existing media asset without losing any metadata or changing its ID. There is also an improved algorithm for generating resized client-side images. And, as always, there are bug fixes. How to apply this update If your existing gallery is 4.X, upgrading is easy — just copy the files from the upgrade package over your existing installation. There are no web.config changes to merge and you don’t have to worry about the version_key.txt file or your license information. Get the upgrade package from your downloads page. If you are upgrading from an earlier version, follow the instructions in the Admin Guide. Replace existing media asset This has been a top feature request and we are glad to finally implement it. It is available in all editions, including Gallery Server Free. Beginning with 4.3.0, a new replace button appears in [...]

Another happy Gallery Server customer

By | January 10th, 2017|Uncategorized|0 Comments

We love it when customers take the time to give us feedback, regardless of whether it's positive or negative. Today I thought I'd share a compliment we received yesterday from Tom Slaughter at Earth Oasis Computers. The ability to edit the original file metadata is AWESOME. I’ve been playing with it and am so happy I upgraded!! Thanks, Tom!

Customer post-mortem: Issue with AD groups

By | December 2nd, 2016|Troubleshooting|0 Comments

Today I wrapped up one of the most challenging customer support issues we've ever had. In the end, the solution was ridiculously simple (as solutions often are), but it took many hours and misleading clues to get there (as it often does). Here's the story, along with the twists and turns. Gallery Server has supported Active Directory authentication for many years but until recently it hasn't supported integration with AD groups. This is really nice to have in corporate environments because you don't have to manage a separate set of roles, especially the addition and removal of AD accounts to/from roles. Gallery Server recognizes your AD groups, including their members, and uses them to secure your gallery access. We couldn't fit this feature into the initial 4.0 release but we announced on our website that it would be available by the third quarter of 2016. In June 2016, a customer from Norway approached us [...]

Gallery Server 4.2 released

By | October 13th, 2016|Announcements|1 Comment

Hot on the heels of the 4.1 release, we are happy to announce Gallery Server 4.2. We made it easier to upload a watermark image and updated several third party libraries to their latest versions. And of course there are some bug fixes. Applying it to your 4.X installation is easy — just copy the files from the upgrade package over your existing installation. There are no web.config changes to merge and you don’t have to worry about the version_key.txt file or your license information. Get the upgrade package from your downloads page. If you are upgrading from an earlier version, follow the instructions in the Admin Guide. Watermark image upload This is something we've wanted to do for a long time and it always got pushed to the back burner. No longer. Beginning with 4.2, you can upload a watermark image directly from the Image Settings page. When you upload an image, it is saved [...]

Gallery Server 4.1 released

By | September 26th, 2016|Announcements|0 Comments

We're happy to announce the immediate availability of Gallery Server 4.1. It includes built in support for Active Directory Groups, a new blacklist option for the auto-logon feature, several workflow enhancements, and more than a dozen bug fixes. Applying it to your 4.0 installation is easy — just copy the files from the upgrade package over your existing installation. There are no web.config changes to merge and you don’t have to worry about the version_key.txt file or your license information. Get the upgrade package from your downloads page. If you are upgrading from an earlier version, follow the instructions in the Admin Guide. Active Directory Groups integration The biggest enhancement in 4.1 is the ability to use Active Directory groups as roles in your gallery. We're excited about this feature because it's been on a lot of people's wish list for a long time. Until recently, Gallery Server required an administrator to manually manage the role membership [...]

The long slow death of shared web hosting company Arvixe

By | September 14th, 2016|Announcements|0 Comments

Yesterday we completed a task I didn't want to do. Rather, we were forced into it. We moved galleryserverpro.com from Arvixe web hosting to a Microsoft Azure VM. There was some downtime involved as we were dealing with DNS propagation delays and some trouble getting the SSL certs working, but we've been up for over 24 hours now and things are looking good. So what happened? In short, the reliability of the servers at Arvixe has gone dramatically downhill over the last two years. And the service in dealing with those issues has been even worse. We were experiencing outages of our site on a near daily basis. When we notified them, they were often cryptic in their responses and would usually say that the servers were having an issue and they were resolving it. Most of the time they wouldn't create a ticket or post it on their status page. I just had to [...]

Administrator’s Guide Updated for 4.0

By | July 15th, 2016|Announcements|3 Comments

Today we released an updated version of the Gallery Server Administrator’s Guide. The screen shots have been updated and existing chapters were revised to reflect the changes and new features. There's even a new How-To section on enabling the support for the Facebook comment engine. With many software products, the documentation is an afterthought, having minimal or outdated content, if there’s any at all. Gallery Server provides best-of-breed documentation, with deep technical content, tons of screen shots, and How-To sections covering several common tasks. Many of you won’t need to use the guide beyond the initial installation, considering that the user interface is intuitive and easy to use, with plenty of in-application tooltips to guide you along the way. But the Administrators Guide is there for when you need it.
